Greenville residents had for many years enjoyed nature's beauty on their home grounds and in their city. In 1926, because of the growing movement for gardeners to organize, local women felt the need to coordinate their gardening efforts with city beautification. A group of those interested in the beautification of their home gardens and those of the city gathered to discuss organizing a community-wide garden club. This group organized through the Women's Bureau of the Chamber of Commerce. The first officers were Mrs. H. J. Haynsworth, President, T. W.Sloan, Vice-President, Mrs. T. M. Marchant, Secretary and Mrs. L. O. Patterson, Treasurer. The City Beautiful Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, the Greenville Garden Club, adopted a constitution at its March 16, 1927 meeting. The club held its first flower show in 1927 at the Public Library.
